Garter Snakes and Water Snakes

Garter Snakes and Water Snakes

Author David Perlowin states his purpose in writing this guide, This book is intended to inform beginning and experienced hobbyists about selection, proper housing, feeding, general maintenance, and breeding of garter snakes and water snakes. Since these snakes are inexpensive and docile, they are commonly the first choice of young hobbyists (aka children). Perlowin’s commonsense advice can help beginners decide whether or not these snakes are the right pets for them and their families. Garter and Water Snakes offers information on a number of selected species to assist keepers in the proper care of their chosen snakes, From the genus Thamnophis, the author covers Butler’s garter snake, aquatic garter snake, black-necked garter snake, western terrestrial garter snake, checkered garter snake, Plains garter snake, common garter snake, western ribbon snake, and eastern ribbon snake. From the genus Nerodia, American water snakesalt marsh snake, green water snake, plainbelly water snake, southern water snake, diamondback water snake, northern water snake, brown water snake, and Oriental garter snake. This Advanced Vivarium Systems title includes information about selecting and purchasing a healthy water or garter snake, housing and maintenance needs, feeding, handling, breeding, and health care. A separate chapter on diseases and disorders provides a complete primer on health needs and veterinary care. Resources and index included.

A Lifetime Nature Walk

A Lifetime Nature Walk

This book is a collection of essays and anecdotes about 19 animals, 18 birds, 15 fish, 10 reptiles, 31 insects, 39 plants, 17 trees, and 6 other subjects encountered in nature by the author, mostly in the region from West Virginia to Vermont. Hopefully, it lends personality to these subjects and leaves the reader with a sense of the changing view of our natural world during the 20th century. It is not encyclopedic, being limited to things the author has had experience with. On the other hand, it contains many off-beat details not to be found in other references. Among stone-age peoples, one of the important duties the hunter had to fulfill when he returned home was to tell the other members of his tribe where he had been, what he had seen, and what he had done. That is what the author attempts to do in this book. For instance, he tells of: Dealings with raccoons, both tame and wild. How to rescue a skunk from a storm drain. Home-made animal traps. What constitutes a successful backwoods fox hunt. How kingfishers and sparrow hawks mourn their dead. Why bluebirds are scarce. Why a killdeer will tease a dog. Where to find bluegills in the Ohio River or smelt in the Niagara River. A box turtle’s prediction of dry weather and rain. Living where copperheads live. Playing with garter snakes. How to find a bee tree. The very different lives and habits of hornets, brown wasps, and mud dauber wasps. Sleeping with bedbugs. The psychological warfare of the deer fly. When to look for snow fleas. How to recognize chamomile by its aroma. The scarcity of ginseng. Trouble with jack-in-the-pulpit. Using jimson weed to kill flys. The forms and effects of poison ivy.

good house snakes for beginners?

I'm not sure if I want to buy a green, brown, or Garter Snake. This is my first time. They must be small and easy to maintain. help!

So, if you are looking for a beginner snake … I would recommend either a python or a snake corn. both are very easy to maintain. all you need is a heat lamp / pad, water dish, hide and substrate (wood chips to the bottom). you feed them once a week on the same day. you do not need any special care after the mist tank once or twice a day. ball pythons get quite large … 4-5 feet and get very thick … and corn snakes get approximately the same size, but stay thin. these will eb the beginner snake that I could recommend. I have two and they are impressive animals. both are very docile and have never been bitten by one. Hope this helps:)
