Champagne

Champagne

From the smash of a bottle on the side of a new ship to the pop of the cork at a New Year’s Eve party champagne signals celebration, fun, and camaraderie all over the world. Bubbly, as we affectionately call it, is a symbol of luxury and decadence and the go-to drink whenever there is an important toast. This history from Becky Sue Epstein is a celebration of the world’s most celebratory drink.   Here, Epstein chronicles champagne’s story, from the world’s first sparkling wine, produced in Limoux, Languedoc, in 1531 by monks at an abbey in Saint-Hilaire to the celebrities who made champagnes famous and continue to do so today from Dom Perignon to the widow Veuve Cliquot. Most important, Epstein fully explains the distinction between champagne and sparkling wine. In this informative chronicle, she answers whether French champagne is really better than other sparkling wines and elucidates the science behind that characteristic fizz and bubble. She takes the reader on a tour of vineyards in wine regions around the world and teaches the correct techniques for storing and serving champagne and sparkling wines.   Whether you prefer magnums of Cristal or the affordable thrill of Cold Duck, Champagne is an invaluable complement to any bubbly glass and an informative, elegant gift for connoisseurs, beginners, and wine lovers of all kinds.

Bordeaux

Bordeaux

Champagne: The Farewell has the character of a fine wine, sparkling and flavorful, with just a touch of malice.’ -Craig Johnson. Now comes Bordeaux, The Bitter Finish, a treat for fans of Peter Mayle Vintage Capers and Ellen Crosby?s The Merlot Murders NYPD detective Max Maguire returns to France as bodyguard to a famous American wine critic. Max?s mother is French?so Max is not only bilingual but blessed, or cursed, with disapproving (and devious) French relatives. Max is not just escorting the critic, she?s also keeping an eye on a very expensive bottle of wine whose authenticity is in dispute, a pawn in cut-throat wine wars involving critics, wine collectors, and auction houses. Checked into their Paris hotel, it?s not long before Max discovers her client dead in her room and the bottle stolen from the hotel?s safe. So she has no choice but to team up with examining magistrate Olivier Chaumont, the man she had fallen in love with the year before while solving a murder in Champagne. Olivier’s sidekick, Commissaire Abdel Zeroual joins in. Max has no police role in France but she stays a step ahead of the French investigators using tactics learned back in New York, while Olivier weaves in and out of Bordeaux society where he is certain the murderer lurks. Is this something local, or is there really a counterfeit wine operation in play? Moving back and forth from Bordeaux to Manhattan among vintners, restaurateurs, auctioneers, collectors, the rich, as well as among less privileged players, everyone is propelled towards a shocking climax.

Champagne Bottle

How long to keep the unopened bottle of Champagne?

I have a bottle of Champagne from 2000. I bought it in Dec.1999 for the millennium and never opened it. Then still have remained closed during this time, non-refrigerated in the kitchen. Not sure if it is like wine and age better with time or champagne goes wrong .. I do not want sick is that this is the case. Please help … I am not a connioseur champagne.

If stored properly, a vintage champagne 1999 should still be good. Storing champagne is almost like a white wine – which is in a cool (45-55F) dark place on the side. That is the question for the bottle – It is not refrigerated, so the temperature is stored in? If stored at the top of a refrigerator like a lot of people, or if stored in a pantry hot may have gone wrong. A champagne party goes wrong when the carbonation is gone and in part if the wine has become part is oxidized. A leak in the cap could easily cause problems with that. Feel the cork to see if the cork can be removed. If so, could have such leaks. Also look at the side of the bottle to see if there a leak. In general, good brands can be maintained for longer than cheaper brands. Therefore, if the champagne is about $ 20.10, could not maintain well. However, any champagne over $ 40 should still be fine. If you are unsure, look for a good time to open the bottle just for the fun to do so. If you have a chance, then store the bottle in the conditions above and see if it can be worth treausring.
